Riegl (Text Passage) (2020)

Riegl (Text Passage) consists of mirrored Perspex featuring text laser-cut onto the surface. The text is a quote by Alois Riegl and was taken from Henri Zerner’s Aloïs Riegl: Art, Value, and Historicism. The passage itself refers to the subject in which an artwork could be assessed stating: “As for what determines the aesthetic urge to see natural objects in works of art by stressing or repressing the features that isolate them or conversely unify them, one can only indulge in metaphysical conjectures that an art historian must absolutely refuse to make”.
