Apodictically (2019)

Apodictically highlights the way that art is often communicated with the viewer. The quote, taken from an e-flux article [1] (an art-focused online magazine), epitomises the incomprehensive nature of art speak. The article was found via International Art English, an essay by sociologist Alix Rule and artist David Levine aiming to prove scientifically the pretentiousness of art text, and in using this source the artwork acknowledges previous discussions on the issue. However, within the comfortable words of ‘without’ and ‘answering’ the text becomes poetic; a reminder to the viewer of the beauty of words. Apodictically discusses whether art text should be more accessible for a wider audience or whether it should embrace a more niche vocabulary for artistic nuance and to prevent words from falling from use.
